History
Robert Liss began practicing law in 1962 and was joined by partner Anthony Shapero in 2002. Today, Liss & Shapero is recognized for its quality representation and outstanding results.
“The truth for personal injury victims is that no amount of money will truly compensate for what they have lost,” explains Liss. “Equally important, these victims must fully understand the process so they can make knowledgeable decisions every step along the way. In my more than 43 years of practice, I have found that people’s interest may be sparked by outrageous claims but in reality they look to an attorney to achieve a simple goal: to battle the manipulations of insurance companies and ensure that after an injury they have some hope for a normal life.”
Liss is committed to honesty and realism with his clients, but that does not negate his history of negotiating and litigating large settlements. Over the course of his career, Liss has achieved millions of dollars in awards for the clients who turn to him when they are most vulnerable. His reputation for fair dealings and extraordinary results has made him one of the most respected attorneys in this field, both among clients and also among other attorneys.
Much of Liss’s success stems from his understanding that every client is not simply a case file but a life in transition - that his clients have suffered a trauma and are now trying to establish the financial footing to pay their bills and move on with their lives.
While dramatic trials make for good television, Liss has found that they don’t always make for good litigation.
“The majority of our cases are settled outside of a jury trial,” explains Liss. “Again, this goes back to understanding that my clients are recovering from injuries. Skillful negotiation trumps years of litigation every time in the eyes of a client who is suffering. When negotiations fail to come to a just settlement, however, we go to trial confident that 40 years of experience - and a heartfelt belief that what we are doing is crucial to my client’s recovery - is a powerful arsenal in the battle.”
Liss’s distinctive and humanistic philosophy belies his legal tenacity. Known for his take-no-prisoners approach to fighting for his clients, Liss finds that his firm continues to grow in influence and clients. Each month, more than 50 new clients find their advocate within the walls of the Liss & Shapero Law office. This client flow keeps the firm at the forefront of personal injury litigation but still allows for the building of relationships between client and attorney.
Liss began his legal path at the University of Michigan where he earned an undergraduate degree in 1958. Liss then earned a law degree from Wayne State University in 1961. Immediately after his schooling, he went on active duty with the National Guard and then became a reservist until 1967.
Liss established his own firm following his National Guard active duty tour. He began by serving clients in nearly all areas of personal law including real estate, family law, commercial transactions, and bankruptcy. A few years into his career, the laws changed such that general practice made attorneys less effective. Liss realized that he needed to focus his practice in order to be truly fluent in the area of law in which he was most successful - personal injury.
“I have been intimately involved in personal injury and insurance litigation for more than 40 years,” explains Liss. “I can look back over my career and take pride in knowing that I have made a difference in people’s lives when they needed counsel most. I have structured my career and lived my life by an adage that has served me well: When you leave this earth, all you can leave behind is your good name.”
